The use of dietary supplements is increasing each year in the UK. As we become more health conscious, supplements are becoming a popular way to supplement our diets with the nutrients we require. In 2016, 46% of Brits reportedly take vitamins on a daily basis, with this number gradually rising each year.
However, it’s essential to know what goes into your supplements. Reputable UK food supplement firms continue to be worried about imported products that aren’t being checked, some of which have continued active pharmaceutical components such as GABA.
In the UK we have the Food Standards Agency (FSA), Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) and the Trading Standards Office to ensure claims made about a product are accurate and truly represent what we will get if we purchase and use them. But not all companies utilise these services and while the nutritional supplement market is notoriously regulated, in reality it’s under-policed due in part to the way these agencies are set up.
This means that using a reputable brand you can trust is essential when using supplements.
Research the brand. Find out who owns the company of the brand you are interested in. Research their background – are they experts in their field? Can you source their main ingredients to a reputable supplier? Have there been any tests and trials ran on the product to show it works?
Look for independent certifications. You want a product that is free from contaminants such as metals, pesticides and herbicides. ‘GMP’ (Good Manufacturing Practice) confirms that a manufacturer’s main production facilities are conforming to good practices established by their industry. ‘ISO’ (International Standards Organisation) confirms their products are safe, reliable and of good quality. Also look for TSO (Trading Standards Organisation), which enforces consumer protection legislation, and FSA (Food Standards Agency) which is a necessary regulation – supplements are subject to the provisions of general food law.
What is it ‘free of’? Supplements should be free of unnecessary fillers such as colours and additives. Look for supplements that are mainly non-GMO and gluten free. Look for natural flavourings, vegan ingredients & lactose free where possible.
Look at the price. If a brand is cheap, this should raise a red flag – it’s likely that a cheap supplement is made with either inferior ingredients, or it’s fake. The company could be cutting corners in order to decrease their product pricing, another cause for concern.
