International Women’s Day

International Women’s Day is a global celebration of women’s achievements and a call for gender equality. It is celebrated on March 8th every year and has been observed since the early 1900s. The day has a long and storied history, and it is an opportunity to acknowledge the progress that has been made in advancing gender equality and the work that remains to be done.

In some countries, it is a public holiday, while in others it is marked with marches, rallies, and other events. In many workplaces, women are recognised and celebrated for their contributions to their fields, and organisations may hold events to promote gender equality and women’s empowerment.

The theme for International Women’s Day 2023 is “Choose to Challenge,” which is a call to action to challenge gender bias and inequality. It is an opportunity for individuals to examine their own beliefs and actions, and to commit to promoting gender equality in their personal and professional lives. This theme highlights the importance of individual actions and the collective power of people to make a difference.

Despite the progress that has been made, there is still much work to be done to achieve gender equality. Women continue to face discrimination and violence in many parts of the world, and women’s rights are often disregarded or neglected. International Women’s Day is an opportunity to recommit to the fight for gender equality and to celebrate the accomplishments of women everywhere.

To show support of International Women’s Day, the women behind Nutrivitality have shared their own thoughts.

LAURA – SENIOR GRAPHIC DESIGNER

Why do you think it’s important to observe International Women’s Day?
International Women’s Day celebrates equality and the change in policies spurred on by female suffrage movements worldwide. Without these policies, we would still have no right to work or vote, and there would be issues around reproductive rights and abuse against women. By observing the day, we thank those who protested for change.

What does IWD mean to you?
I grew up in a very female-dominant family, surrounded by strong women that have always worked to provide for their families as much as the males have. My nan raised seven children and worked two jobs while her husband often worked away from home for months at a time; she always had food on the table and provided for her children showing that you can do it all; it is very hard work, but it is doable. IWD celebrates the strength of those I find inspiring.

Do you think women are equally represented in your sector of work?
Yes and no. Both men and women have written design history; there are many iconic female designers who have helped to shape graphic design as we know it today. Without those women in design, we wouldn’t have the iconic Nike tick (Carolyn Davidson) or pop culture-infused typefaces (Paula Scher), which played a key role in design evolution and trends. With over 60% of junior designers coming into the industry since 2022 being female, women are slowly being treated more equally. However, sexist ad campaigns and toxic studio culture still exist. The percentage of female creatives that lead in a directing position is fewer than 20%, so there is still plenty of work to be done.

NATALIE K – MARKETING ASSISTANT

Why do you think it’s important to observe International Women’s Day?
It’s empowering to support one another and equally feel supported. It’s also a time to reflect and thank those who suffered harsher inequalities and protested to improve our now society.

What does IWD mean to you?
International Women’s Day is a reminder that I am surrounded by all the strong and beautiful women in my life and that they are an inspiration and a great support system!

Do you think women are equally represented in your sector of work?

I think that over the past few years, the marketing industry has witnessed an increase in women rising up the ladder to become influential leaders. However, I do believe that women still face challenges like gender pay gap, smaller representation and access to higher senior roles. Despite this, women have made significant progress and will continue to push the limits and boundaries.
