It was widely reported over the weekend that scientists are urging people in the UK, and especially in Scotland to take Vitamin D supplements.
Although present in various food sources (such as Cod liver oil, cold-water fish and egg yolks) we get most of our Vitamin D from exposure to sunlight. With adults working long office hours and children spending, on average, an hour less outdoors than they did 10 years ago, we’re just not getting enough sunlight.
Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin, sometimes known as Cholecalciferol. It’s essential for the absorption of calcium and bone development. It also plays a key role in maintaining a healthy immune system. People who have low Vitamin D levels often feel run down, catch colds/flus easily and can experience backaches.
